Optical microresonators are one of the most versatile elements in the micro-photonics toolbox, with many different uses in fundamental research and applications. They provide novel ways to manipulate light and to study the interaction between light and matter. I will discuss the use of evanescent coupling and photoluminescence spectroscopy on microresonators. I will also present results in the fabrication and characterization of micro-scale lasers emitting in the telecom wavelength range using semiconductor rolled-up microtubes.
