AN AFTERLOOK ON THE EVENT

Thank you to all the attendees, speakers, panelists, volunteers, and sponsors for making the Women in Physics Canada 2018 conference a success! It was for us a pleasure to welcome you for this 7th edition of the conference. We hope you enjoyed your stay in Sherbrooke.

Thanks to your active participation, the quality of your talks and your courageous and insightful interventions, stories and perspectives were shared, bringing us closer to more diversity and inclusivity in physics.
Now, it is time to spread what we’ve learned during this event in our respectives institutions.

ABOUT

The 7th edition of the Women in Physics Canada (WIPC 2018) Conference will be held from July 17th to 20th, 2018, at Université de Sherbrooke, Quebec. This renowned national conference will bring together more than a hundred members from the student community, faculty, postdoctoral researchers and professionals from the private sector working in fields related to physics.

This conference will provide a large array of opportunities for exchange and learning, through different activities such as :

  • Scientific presentations from leaders in various fields of physics;
  • Professional skills development workshops;
  • Presentations on the problematics and strategies related to the issue of diversity in physics;
  • Panel discussions on career paths;
  • Networking activities;
  • Student presentations and posters.

Carried by the principles of inclusion, this conference aims to be a place of gathering for all players involved in the promotion of diversity in physics.

GOALS

The most recent studies demonstrate that diversity promotes performance, creativity and innovation, in one word, success. Yet, the fields of science and technology suffer from a blatant lack of diversity. Notably, the number of women working in those fields continues to be largely insufficient to ensure optimal exploitation of our society’s talent pool*. The Women in Physics Canada Conferences are a major element of the global effort aiming to increase women’s presence in physics. The purpose of this event is therefore to support and encourage young female physicists at the early career stages to persist in this field. To achieve this goal, this conference will offer amongst others the opportunity to:

  • Participate in a professional conference;
  • Collectively raise awareness on the issues and obstacles faced by women and minorities in physics;
  • Build a network of contacts at the canadian scale;
  • Get informed about opportunities for careers in science.
* For more information, please consult the publications of the Chair for women in science and engineering.
